Breakthrough Prayers: Don't Stop Praying Until the Breakthrough Comes - Part 5
Main Text: Luke 18:1-8 (AMP)
Jesus told the parable of the persistent widow to teach one powerful truth: never give up praying. Breakthrough often belongs to those who refuse to quit.
Every believer eventually faces a situation where one prayer isn't enough. Sometimes the answer doesn't come after one day, after one week, or after one month. Sometimes breakthrough requires persistent faith.
The widow teaches us that:
- Persistence is not trying to convince God to care
- Persistence is demonstrating that we trust Him enough to keep coming
Your breakthrough may be healing, restoration, financial provision, marriage restoration, a prodigal child returning home, or freedom from addiction.
Jesus begins this story with a lesson before He tells the story: "Always pray and never give up."
Many people quit after the first knock, but breakthrough often belongs to those who keep knocking.
Ask... Seek... Knock... - Matthew 7:7
Never give up praying.
Now Jesus was telling the disciples a parable to make the point that at all times they ought to pray and not give up and lose heart. - Luke 18:1 (AMP)
Key 1: Make Prayer Your First Response
Jesus didn't say complain, worry, or quit. He said pray.
Call on Me in the day of trouble; I will rescue you, and you shall honor and glorify Me. - Psalm 50:15 (AMP)
Principle: Prayer should become our first instinct - not our last resort.
Illustration: When a child is frightened, they instinctively run to a loving parent. God wants us to run to Him first.
In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and had no respect for man. There was a desperate widow in that city and she kept coming to him and saying, "Give me justice and legal protection from my adversary." For a time he would not; but later he said to himself, "Even though I do not fear God nor respect man..." - Luke 18:2-4 (AMP)
Don't allow frustration to limit your determination.
Yet because this widow continues to bother me, I will give her justice and legal protection; otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out. - Luke 18:5 (AMP)
Key 2: Persistence Is Proof of Faith
The widow kept coming. She refused to quit.
So let's not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don't give up or quit. - Galatians 6:9 (MSG)
Constantly rejoicing in hope because of our confidence in Christ, steadfast and patient in distress, devoted to prayer - continually seeking wisdom, guidance, and strength. - Romans 12:12 (AMP)
This verse defines prayer for us as continually seeking wisdom, guidance, and strength. Wisdom, guidance, and strength come from God. The Bible teaches us to look to the hills from whence comes our help - our help comes from the Lord.
Persistent prayer says: "I still believe God is working."
Persistence often separates success from failure.
One drop changes nothing. A thousand drops carve stone. Persistent prayer changes impossible situations.
Then the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says! And will not our just God defend and avenge His elect who cry out to Him day and night? Will He delay in providing justice on their behalf?" - Luke 18:6-7 (AMP)
This verse lets us know that God is not against us crying out to Him.
Key 3: Don't Let Delays Destroy Your Faith
Luke 18:7 tells us - God hears every prayer.
But those who wait for the Lord - who expect, look for, and hope in Him - will gain new strength and renew their power; they will lift up their wings and rise up close to God like eagles rising toward the sun; they will run and not become weary; they will walk and not grow tired. - Isaiah 40:31 (AMP)
Principle: Delay is not denial. God's timing is perfect.
Illustration: A farmer doesn't harvest the day after planting. Growth happens underground before it appears above ground.
Key 4: Keep Coming Even When Nothing Changes
The widow didn't quit because she didn't see immediate results.
Consider it nothing but joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you fall into various trials. Be assured that the testing of your faith through experience produces endurance leading to spiritual maturity and inner peace. And let endurance have its perfect result and do a thorough work, so that you may be perfect and completely developed in your faith, lacking in nothing. - James 1:2-4 (AMP)
Principle: Faith keeps showing up.
Story: Abraham waited decades for Isaac. Noah built the ark for years before it rained. Persistence has always been part of God's process. God is still working while you're waiting.
I tell you that He will defend and avenge them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find this kind of persistent faith on the earth? - Luke 18:8 (AMP)
Key 5: Faith Keeps Knocking Until the Door Opens
Persistent prayer is persistent faith.
But without faith it is impossible to walk with God and please Him, for whoever comes near to God must necessarily believe that God exists and that He rewards those who earnestly and diligently seek Him. - Hebrews 11:6 (AMP)
For this reason I am telling you, whatever things you ask for in prayer - in accordance with God's will - believe with confident trust that you have received them, and they will be given to you. - Mark 11:24 (AMP)
Principle: Don't stop praying because you don't see results. Keep praying because you trust God's promises.
6 Characteristics of Breakthrough Prayer
- It is consistent
- It is persistent
- It is faith-filled
- It is patient
- It refuses discouragement
- It trusts God's timing
"Delay is not denial - it is often divine development."
"Breakthrough belongs to those who refuse to give up."
A Word for You
The widow's breakthrough did not come because she had influence, wealth, or power. It came because she refused to quit. Jesus gave us this parable so that when your answer seems delayed, you won't stop praying.
Keep asking. Keep seeking. Keep knocking.
The God who hears persistent prayers is still opening doors today.
