911 Medical Emergency | Part 3

Key Thoughts From This Situation

  1. A problem outside of their ability to fix
  2. A call had to be made- 911 doesn't call you, you must call them
  3. The ability to speak through your issue
  4. Faith had to be present

Main Focus for Today

In this message, we will see how Jesus was willing and able to heal the incurable and touch the untouchable. This should give us solace with whatever health issue we may be dealing with. We will begin our journey in Matthew 8.

Matthew 8:1-13 (AMP)

1 When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed Him. 2 And a leper came up to Him and bowed down before Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You are able to make me clean (well)."

A. Faith was evident by his coming

B. We must understand what the leper represented

C. Rules surrounding Lepers-

D. Leprosy was a horrible disease that was incurable at the time

E. Leper Laws

  1. Lepers had to wear torn clothes.
  2. They must let their hair on their head hang loose.
  3. They shall cover up their upper lip and cry out, "Unclean, unclean.
  4. They have to live alone.
  5. They must live outside the camp. The leper then was considered utterly unclean physically and spiritually.
  6. The leper wasn't allowed to come within six feet of another human, including their family.
  7. A leper couldn't be within 150 feet of a person when the wind blew.

F. Jesus purpose was not just salvation, but restoration

G. What Does Salvation Mean in Greek? The Greek word for salvation is "soteria," It encapsulates the concepts of deliverance, preservation, healing, and wholeness.

• Notice his confession" If you are willing"

• The leper's faith was displayed in his confession

3 Jesus reached out His hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be cleansed." Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

A. I want to thank God for touching the untouchables. Jesus came for the least, the lost, and left out.

B. All of us have fallen short of the glory, but we serve a God who qualifies the unqualified.

4 And Jesus said to him, "See that you tell no one [about this]; but go, show yourself to the priest [for inspection] and present the offering that Moses commanded, as a testimony (evidence) to them [of your healing]."

A. Notice the connection between the old and new covenant

B. Jesus said do what Moses said

5 As Jesus went into Capernaum, a centurion came up to Him, begging Him [for help], 6 and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, with intense and terrible, tormenting pain." 7 Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him."

A. Jesus was willing to make a house call, not too many doctors do that anymore.

B. He's willing to change his schedule for one person?

C. Jesus Christ is never-changing.

Hebrews 13:8 (NLT)

8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
8 But the centurion replied to Him, "Lord, I am not worthy to have You come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.

Proverbs 18:21 (AMP)

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.

2 Corinthians 4:13 (AMP)

13 Yet we have the same spirit of faith as he had, who wrote in Scripture, "I believed, therefore I spoke." We also believe, therefore we also speak,

Hebrews 11:3 (AMP)

3 By faith [that is, with an inherent trust and enduring confidence in the power, wisdom and goodness of God] we understand that the worlds (universe, ages) were framed and created [formed, put in order, and equipped for their intended purpose] by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.

Hebrews 2:6-8 (MSG)

2-6 What is man and woman that you bother with them; why take a second look their way? You made them not quite as high as angels, bright with Eden's dawn light; Then you put them in charge of your entire handcrafted world. When God put them in charge of everything, nothing was excluded. But we don't see it yet, don't see everything under human jurisdiction.

Psalms 45:1 (NKJV)

1 To the Chief Musician. Set to "The Lilies." A Contemplation of the sons of Korah. A Song of Love. My heart is overflowing with a good theme; I recite my composition concerning the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
9 For I also am a man subject to authority [of a higher rank], with soldiers subject to me; and I say to one, 'Go!' and he goes, and to another, 'Come!' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does it."

A. The soldier understands how orders and giving and taken

B. He understood chain of command

C. And the power and authority of the King

D. The waves respond to Jesus

E. Fire from heaven responded through Elijah

F. Joshua spoke to the sun and the moon

G. You don't know your pilot, but you trust the voice

10 When Jesus heard this, He was amazed and said to those who were following Him, "I tell you truthfully, I have not found such great faith [as this] with anyone in Israel.

Hebrews 11:1 (AMP)

1 Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses].
11 I say to you that many [Gentiles] will come from east and west, and will sit down [to feast at the table, and enjoy God's promises] with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven [because they accepted Me as Savior], 12 while the sons and heirs of the kingdom [the descendants of Abraham who will not recognize Me as Messiah] will be thrown out into the outer darkness; in that place [which is farthest removed from the kingdom] there will be weeping [in sorrow and pain] and grinding of teeth [in distress and anger]." 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go; it will be done for you as you have believed." And the servant was restored to health at that very hour.

Ezekiel 37:1-10 (NLT)

1 The Lord took hold of me, and I was carried away by the Spirit of the Lord to a valley filled with bones. 2 He led me all around among the bones that covered the valley floor. They were scattered everywhere across the ground and were completely dried out. 3 Then he asked me, "Son of man, can these bones become living people again?""O Sovereign Lord," I replied, "you alone know the answer to that."4 Then he said to me, "Speak a prophetic message to these bones and say, 'Dry bones, listen to the word of the Lord! 5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Look! I am going to put breath into you and make you live again! 6 I will put flesh and muscles on you and cover you with skin. I will put breath into you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.'"7 So I spoke this message, just as he told me. Suddenly as I spoke, there was a rattling noise all across the valley. The bones of each body came together and attached themselves as complete skeletons. 8 Then as I watched, muscles and flesh formed over the bones. Then skin formed to cover their bodies, but they still had no breath in them.9 Then he said to me, "Speak a prophetic message to the winds, son of man. Speak a prophetic message and say, 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, O breath, from the four winds! Breathe into these dead bodies so they may live again.'"10 So I spoke the message as he commanded me, and breath came into their bodies. They all came to life and stood up on their feet—a great army.

Discussion Questions

  1. The leper said, "Lord, if You are willing, You are able to make me clean." Why do you think he questioned God's willingness rather than His ability? How does this relate to our own prayers today?
  2. Review the seven leper laws listed in the notes. How would these restrictions have affected someone physically, emotionally, and spiritually? What does Jesus' willingness to touch the leper reveal about His character?
  3. The Greek word for salvation is "soteria," which means deliverance, preservation, healing, and wholeness. How does this broader definition of salvation change your understanding of what Jesus came to accomplish?
  4. Jesus told the healed leper to present himself to the priest according to Moses' command. Why was it important for Jesus to honor the old covenant while establishing the new?
  5. The centurion said, "Only say the word, and my servant will be healed." What does this reveal about his understanding of spiritual authority? How can we develop this same level of faith?
  6. The centurion understood chain of command and authority because of his military background. How does understanding spiritual authority help us in prayer and faith?
  7. Jesus said He had not found such great faith in all of Israel as He found in the centurion (a Gentile). What made the centurion's faith "great" in Jesus' eyes?
  8. Multiple scriptures in this lesson emphasize the power of our words (Proverbs 18:21, 2 Corinthians 4:13, Hebrews 11:3). How does speaking align with believing? What should change about the way we speak?
  9. In Ezekiel 37, God asked, "Can these bones become living people again?" Then He commanded Ezekiel to speak to them. What does this teach us about the role of prophetic speech in bringing life to dead situations?
  10. The notes mention that Jesus came for "the least, the lost, and left out" and that He "qualifies the unqualified." How does this truth impact the way you see yourself and others who feel disqualified or untouchable?
