Genesis 3:6-11 (AMP) – WE HAVE FULL ACCESS

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was delightful to look at, and a tree to be desired in order to make one wise and insightful, she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of the two of them were opened [that is, their awareness increased], and they knew that they were naked; and they fastened fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool [afternoon breeze] of the day, so the man and his wife hid and kept themselves hidden from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

A. So, I want you to notice that God never try to hide from them they choose to hide from Him

B. And we have been running from God's presence every since

C. I you ever notice when you are struggling with a sin issue, you also struggle to come to church

D. And sin will always separate us from God

9 But the Lord God called to Adam, and said to him, "Where are you?" 10 He said, "I heard the sound of You [walking] in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself." 11 God said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten [fruit] from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?"

A. Fear

B. And this is the Bible 1st confession of sin

The Consequence: Lost Access

Genesis 3:21-24 (AMP) 21 The Lord God made tunics of [animal] skins for Adam and his wife and clothed them. 22 And the Lord God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), knowing [how to distinguish between] good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take from the tree of life as well, and eat [its fruit], and live [in this fallen, sinful condition] forever"— 23 therefore the Lord God sent Adam away from the Garden of Eden, to till and cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So God drove the man out; and at the east of the Garden of Eden He [permanently] stationed the cherubim and the sword with the flashing blade which turned round and round [in every direction] to protect and guard the way (entrance, access) to the tree of life.

God creates a new order -- we must now flow through a human priest

  • Skit-Play with Priest and Sinner
  • So, the gospel of Jesus Christ can be surmized into God wanting to reconciling himself to us through the sacrifice of his so providing us access to the Father which Adam shunned.

The Veil: A Barrier to God's Presence

Chronicles 3:14 (AMP) He made the veil of blue, purple, and crimson yarn and fine linen, with cherubim woven into it.

A. Remember the cherubim at the gates of the garden

1 Kings 8:6 (AMP) 6 Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, into the Holy of Holies, under the wings of the cherubim.
Leviticus 16:2 (AMP) 2 The Lord said to Moses, "Tell Aaron your brother that he must not enter at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil (the Holy of Holies), before the mercy seat which is on the ark, or he will die, for I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.

A. Who could go past this veil into the Most Holy Place of the temple?

B. Let's go to the new covenant and God's answer to the veil

The Veil Torn: Access Restored

Matthew 27:45-51 (AMP) 45 Now from the sixth hour (noon) there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.). 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud [agonized] voice, "Eli, Eli, lama sa-bach-thani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" 47 When some of the bystanders there heard it, they began saying, "This man is calling for Elijah." 48 Immediately one of them ran, and took a sponge, soaked it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49 But the rest said, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him [from death]." 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud [agonized] voice, and gave up His spirit [voluntarily, sovereignly dismissing and releasing His spirit from His body in submission to His Father's plan]. 51 And [at once] the veil [of the Holy of Holies] of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; the earth shook and the rocks were split apart.

The Significance of the Torn Veil:

A. The veil in the temple separated the Holy of Holies, where God's presence was believed to dwell, from the rest of the temple.

B. Its tearing symbolizes the removal of the barrier between God and humanity, granting believers direct access to God through Jesus Christ.

C. The tearing from top to bottom suggests divine intervention, as it would be impossible for humans to tear it in such a manner.

D. The veil was approximately 60 feet high and several inches thick, making it humanly impossible to tear from top to bottom.

E. The tearing of the veil signifies the end of the old covenant and the beginning of the new covenant, where direct access to God is granted through Jesus Christ.

F. Believers now have direct access to God without the need for an earthly mediator, emphasizing the personal relationship each believer can have with God.

Our New Access Through Christ

Hebrews 10:19-21 (MSG) 19-21 So, friends, we can now—without hesitation—walk right up to God, into "the Holy Place." Jesus has cleared the way by the blood of his sacrifice, acting as our priest before God. The "curtain" into God's presence is his body.
Hebrews 4:16 (AMP) 16 Therefore let us [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God's gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment].
Ephesians 2:18 (AMP) For it is through Him that we both have a [direct] way of approach in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens [outsiders without rights of citizenship], but you are fellow citizens with the saints (God's people), and are [members] of God's household
John 14:6 (AMP) 6 Jesus said to him, "I am the [only] Way [to God] and the [real] Truth and the [real] Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Discussion Questions

  1. Genesis 3:8 shows Adam and Eve hiding from God after sinning. The notes say "God never tried to hide from them—they chose to hide from Him." Why is it our natural response to hide from God when we sin rather than run to Him?
  2. The observation is made: "When you are struggling with a sin issue, you also struggle to come to church." Why does sin make us avoid God's presence? How can we break this cycle?
  3. Genesis 3:24 describes cherubim guarding the entrance to the tree of life with a flaming sword. What does this symbolize about the seriousness of sin and our lost access to God?
  4. Under the Old Covenant, only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies, and only once a year. How would this system make God feel distant and inaccessible to ordinary people?
  5. The temple veil was 60 feet high and several inches thick. It tore from top to bottom at the moment Jesus died. What does the direction of the tear (top to bottom) reveal about who initiated our restored access?
  6. Hebrews 10:19-21 says "the curtain into God's presence is his body." How does understanding that Jesus' body was torn like the veil deepen your appreciation for your access to God?
  7. Hebrews 4:16 invites us to "approach the throne of grace with confidence and without fear." If we have this access, why do so many Christians still approach God timidly, as if they're not sure they're welcome?
  8. The message emphasizes we now have "all access" to God—no more barriers, no human mediators needed. How should this truth change your prayer life? Your daily communion with God?
  9. Ephesians 2:19 says we are "no longer strangers and aliens...but members of God's household." How does understanding yourself as a family member (not just a visitor) change your relationship with God?
  10. John 14:6 declares Jesus is "the only way" to the Father. In a culture that says "all paths lead to God," how do you lovingly but firmly communicate this exclusive claim of Christ?
