God chooses the one everybody overlooked

David wasn't even invited to his own anointing. Learn why God chooses the overlooked, what He sees in your heart, and why your hidden season matters so much.

Sometimes God deliberately chooses the person everyone else rejected. David was not even invited to his own anointing, yet he was the one God had already picked to be king. If you have ever felt overlooked, discounted, or left out, this is your reminder that God sees what people miss, and He is often working hardest in the places no one is watching.

Today we meet one of the most overlooked men in Scripture, David, in 1 Samuel 16. His story holds a truth that will change how you see your waiting season: God does not choose the way people choose.

Why does God choose the people everyone overlooks

God sent the prophet Samuel on a dangerous mission to anoint a new king while Saul still sat on the throne. Interestingly, even Samuel, the most accurate prophet in Israel, was not given the full plan. He was told to go and would be shown the rest later. When you want God to spell out every detail before you move, remember He often gives the next step and holds the rest, because walking without the whole map is exactly what faith is.

When Samuel arrived at Jesse's house, he saw the oldest son Eliab, tall and impressive, and assumed this had to be the one. But he was looking through the lens of the past, because the last king, Saul, had also been tall and handsome. Be careful applying God's last instruction to God's new assignment. What worked in the previous season is not always where God is now.

So God corrected him with one of the most important verses in the Bible. Do not look at his appearance or height, for the Lord does not see as man sees. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

What does it mean that God looks at the heart

Man evaluates the outside, how a person looks and how well they speak, but God examines the heart, the seat of your thoughts, your will, and your true motives. A lot of people give you lip service while their heart is somewhere else entirely, and God is not fooled by any of it.

Scripture gives you a couple of ways to read a heart without playing judge. Jesus said where your treasure is, there your heart will be also, so what a person treasures tells you where their heart lives. And Luke 6:45 says the mouth speaks out of the overflow of the heart, so what a person keeps talking about reveals what is really inside them. You rarely have to guess where someone's heart is. Watch what they treasure and listen to what they keep saying.

This is also sobering, because it is how God evaluates us. He is not impressed by how polished you sound. He is asking a simpler question: is your heart with Me? That is exactly what happened to Saul. When his heart turned, God moved the kingdom to a man after His own heart, even while Saul still held the title. God is the only one who can fire you and keep you on the job.

Why was David left out of his own anointing

Watch how far down the list David was. Samuel worked through seven of Jesse's sons, and God chose none of them. Finally Samuel asked, are these all your sons? And Jesse basically said, well, there is still the youngest, but he is out with the sheep.

David was not passed over on the bench. He was not even in the building. There was a consecration service to choose a king, and his own father did not think to call him in. It is one thing when strangers overlook you. What do you do when the people closest to you do not even consider you?

That is how the world often treats the people God has marked. You could not be that smart, you could not have earned that, you do not have the right look or the right pedigree. But here is the truth to hold onto: if God has you in the room, you are already qualified. When Samuel finally saw David, God said, arise and anoint him, this is the one. While his brothers were positioning for the promotion, the shepherd they forgot about was the one heaven had chosen all along.

Why does God put you through a hidden season

Right after David was anointed, the Spirit of the Lord came on him, but he did not go straight to the palace. He went back to the sheep. He was anointed at seventeen and did not become king until thirty, which means roughly thirteen years passed in what I call the dark room.

Think of an old Polaroid or film camera. After the picture is taken, it goes into a dark room to develop, and in that darkness the negatives get stripped away. God often anoints you and then takes you into a dark season, not because He stopped loving you, but because that is where He develops you. It feels like being torn apart, but He is actually preparing you for what is next. People see your glory and do not know your story, the stripping season that made you who you are.

I lived in my own dark room. After the NFL did not work out, I was a substitute teacher in a rough classroom and did people's taxes at a Jackson Hewitt inside a Walmart at night. In that season God told me, "You are a diamond in the dark. Wait until the light hits you." Your oil comes through the crushing, and you do not get to skip that step. Sometimes God strips everything away until all you have left is Jesus, and that turns out to be the safest place you can be, because that is when you learn you cannot do any of it without Him.

What is the difference between being anointed and being appointed

Here is a distinction that will save you a lot of frustration. There is a season of anointing and a separate season of appointing, and most of us confuse the two.

Anointing is when God recognizes you. Appointing is when people finally recognize you. They are two different seasons, and between them sits a third one nobody talks about: the disappointing. After the anointing often comes the disappointing, and only later comes the appointing. Even Jesus was anointed and then immediately led into the wilderness. To be anointed is to be crushed first, because that is where the oil comes from.

So David got anointed, then went right back to serving. And watch God's providence. An evil spirit troubled Saul, his servants went looking for someone who could play the harp, and David, already skilled at it, got called into the palace. Catch this: David had to be skilled before he got the call. He could not get ready when the opportunity came. He had to already be ready. A lot of us are waiting for the call before we put in the work, when God is waiting for the work before He sends the call.

How do you stay faithful while you wait for your season

David got into the palace as a harp player, not as a warrior, even though he was already a proven fighter. Sometimes it is your quiet service, not your résumé, that opens the door. He did not announce that he was the anointed king. He just served faithfully, and Saul came to love him.

Here is the test. Can you keep your composure and keep serving while you already know you are next? David could have said "keep that seat warm, I'm coming," but he never said a word. He understood that his current assignment was not his final assignment. Luke 16:10 says whoever is faithful with little will be faithful with much, so the small title and the small job are exactly where God is testing your heart.

And God had David in that palace for a reason bigger than the moment. The harp got him in proximity, so he could get used to the palace and learn its ways before his season came. Sometimes God puts you in the room not for right now, but for your next season, so do not waste it. Treat the assignment you do not love like a paid internship, because God is working it together for your good even when you cannot see how.

Think of a newborn whose neck is not yet strong enough to hold its own head. Could it be that God has you in this season to strengthen your neck for the weight of the crown He is preparing? He will not fast-forward your life. You have to grow through it.

Why you shouldn't rush God's timing

I learned this the hard way with a plumbing emergency. I accidentally hit the well on my property with the lawnmower and water shot everywhere. Wanting a fast fix, I grabbed a quick patch product from the store, screwed it on, turned the water back on, and it held for about two seconds before it blew right off. The plumber reviews online all said the same thing: as soon as pressure hits it, it fails.

So I did it the right way with primer and cement, and that meant I had to let it set overnight and do nothing. By morning it worked perfectly. And God spoke to me through it. A lot of His children want a quick fix, but when you rush, pressure busts what was never allowed to set. How many times have we gotten into trouble chasing the quick way, quick money, quick everything? Sometimes God has to set you, and setting means being still while He does the work. Be still and know that He is God.

James 1:2 says to count it joy when you face trials, because the testing of your faith produces endurance that makes you mature and complete. You would not know how to stand in the storm if God had not walked you through the very things that put His Word down on the inside of you.

An invitation for you

Your value is not determined by who notices you. God sees what people miss, and your hidden season is not a wasted season. If God has called you, it is only a matter of time before He shines the light on you, because a light is not meant to stay hidden.

Have you made Jesus your Lord and Savior? He is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him. Tomorrow is not promised. Maybe you have drifted, or you are looking for a church home. If you want something different, you have to do something different. Change begins with you.

You can pray this right now. "Father God, I thank You for Your Son Jesus, who died for me and rose for me, that I may have life and have it more abundantly. Holy Spirit, come into my life. Guide me, lead me, fill me. I'll never be the same. In Jesus' name, amen."

Common questions

Why did God choose David over his brothers?

God rejected David's taller, older brothers and chose the overlooked shepherd because He looks at the heart rather than outward appearance. First Samuel 16:7 says man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. God saw in David a faithfulness and devotion developed in the hidden place of the sheep field that no one else valued.

What does it mean that God looks at the heart?

It means God evaluates your inner life, your motives, character, faith, and sincerity, rather than your appearance, status, or how well you speak. Jesus taught that your treasure and your words reveal your heart, so what you value and what you keep talking about show where your heart truly is before God.

What is the difference between being anointed and appointed?

Anointing is when God recognizes and calls you; appointing is when people finally recognize it publicly. Between them is often a disappointing season of preparation. David was anointed king around age seventeen but not crowned until about thirty, spending roughly thirteen years being developed before his calling became visible to everyone.

Why does God allow hidden seasons of waiting?

Hidden seasons develop character and prepare you to carry future responsibility, like a photo developing in a dark room or a newborn's neck strengthening to hold its head. God does not rush the process or offer quick fixes, because what is forced under pressure breaks. Faithfulness in small, unseen things prepares you for greater things.
